General Eye Checkup
Eyes are our window to the world. A routine complete eye examination is essential
to catch a lot of eye diseases which otherwise have no symptoms and can lead to severe vision loss.
Just like the eyes are our windows to the world they are also a window to the body and its general
health. Many systemic diseases like Diabetes, high blood pressure, neuro problems etc can be caught
during examination of the eye’s retina. A general or COMPREHENSIVE eye check up is a systematic screening
of the eyes and includes a preliminary testing of eyesight, spectacle number, eye pressure and muscle balance
by a trained optometrist followed by examination of the front and back of the eye by an Ophthalmologist.
Dilatation of pupil using eye drops is often necessary to confirm spectacle numbers and for detailed
examination of the retina especially in children.
Cataract is the clouding of our natural lens with age or due to disease or drug (most commonly steroids) side effect. Cataract is normally an ageing change and most of us will develop it at some time or the other. Diabetic patients develop cataracts at a comparatively younger age.
The symptoms of cataract are frequent change in glasses, need for brighter light for reading, clouding of vision, glare, and sometimes multiple shadowy images. The treatment is simple with modern surgery in which a Phacoemulisification probe enters the eye through a small self healing incision, emulsifies the lens matters and sucks it in. An artificial lens or IOL is implanted in the eye to replace the natural lens.
IOL are of many types and you will be counselled regarding the suitability of each for your eye after some measurements of your eye are taken (BIOMETRY).
The most commonly used lenses are MONOFOCAL IOLs which correct our vision for distance only and reading glasses are required for near work.
MULTIFOCAL/TRIFOCAL IOLs correct both distance and near vision and remove dependency on glasses for any kind of work.
TORIC IOLs are meant to correct CYLINDRICAL powers and are available as MONOFOCAL or MULTIFOCAL IOLs. This option is given to any patient who shows a significant cylindrical power on measurement.
Our centre is equipped with state of the art machines for safe and advanced cataract surgery.

Retina & Uvea
Retina is the innermost layer at the back of the eye on which images are formed. Any damage to this can seriously impair vision. The retina can be affected in Diabetes with bleeding and swelling often with no symptoms until late. This is known as DIABETIC RETINOPATHY. AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION is also a disease in which age related changes occur in the central most sensitive part of the retina. The retina can also develop holes more commonly in those with high minus numbers and these are only visible after a DILATED eye examination. If the retina detaches from its place it can lead to sudden loss of vision and requires immediate surgery. Tobacco users and smokers are at high risk for retinal diseases.
Our retina department is equipped with the latest in diagnostics and management of even complex retinal problems.
Our Eyes maintain their shape because of fluid inside. This fluid is maintained at a normal pressure range by a balance between its production and drainage. Just like blood pressure it is important for this EYE pressure to remain normal. When the pressure is high it may damage the nerve of our eye resulting in loss of our side vision. This is known as Glaucoma. Remember that central vision is lost at very late stages of glaucoma and damage to glaucoma is usually irreversible. Glaucoma mostly has NO symptoms unless it’s a form of glaucoma were eye pressure rises suddenly and causes severe eyepain and headache along with other symptoms. Most people don’t know that they suffer from it and only a complete eye check-up can pick it up. Treatment involves the use of eyedrops (usually lifelong) and sometimes laser, surgery.
A family history of Glaucoma, Farsightedness (plus numbers for distance), steroid use are some of the risk factors for Glaucoma.
We have a well equipped Glaucoma Department with all essential diagnostic equipment like Gonioscopy, Pachymetry, OCT, Humphrey Visual Field.
Spectacle Removal Surgery
misalignment of eyes or squint is a common problem which apart from being a cosmetic concern can also interfere in our personal and professional life because of poor eye contact, loss of 3D vision and at times eyestrain. Squint can also be because of paralysis and can cause double vision. Management of squint is simple and surgery can correct the misalignment of eyes. Squint surgery does not cause any change in eyesight or spectacle number and is very safe.
This is a special branch of ophthalmology that deals with eye complaints caused by problems of the brain and nervous system. It includes sudden complete or partial loss of vision, problems in side vision, double vision etc. Sometimes serious neuro problems like brain tumour, stroke, raised intracranial pressure etc can be diagnosed with the help of an eye exam and some special eye tests like perimetry (for field of vision). At times CT-scan or MRI may also be required.
For ages now, eye exercises have been done by time taking and tedious methods like pencil push-ups and sessions on the synoptophore which are boring for the patients and compliance is low especially in children. Our Vision therapy (VT)clinic is equipped with the latest in this field- the vision therapy system 4 (VTS4) which is a computerized system that uses a wide screen 3D HD television with liquid crystal glasses and an X-Box gaming console for the diagnosis and management of various eye problems like computer vision syndrome, Lazy eye, focusing weakness, muscle imbalances and certain squints. The exercises are easy, effective and fun with quicker recovery as compared to traditional methods. They are usually done at the hospital under supervision in 10-15 sessions of 30-45 minutes each. Home exercise software is also available for the treatment of lazy eye, muscle and/or focusing weakness and requires only a regular desktop or laptop. A special software for perceptual vision problems in children with learning disabilities is also available as home VT.
Children Eye Centre
Eyecare for children differs from that for an adult in many different ways because of the challenges presented by an immature vision system. Just like a newborn who is unable to walk or talk, the development of good eyesight and eye coordination is also a gradual process that starts at birth and continues till the age of 6-7 years (the age of visual maturity). There are many challenges in this field including the inability of the patient to tell his/her problem or to cooperate for the various procedures that are part of a comprehensive eye check up. Correction of problems before the age of visual maturity is important for proper development of eyesight. Because of all these reasons it is recommended that a child undergoes an eye check up at birth, 6months , 3-3.5 yrs, 5-6 yrs. Our children eye centre is a dedicated child friendly OPD equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. A spacious and colorful play area ensures that our little guests have fun even while getting their eyes tested !
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a disease of the immature retina and is a leading cause of PREVENTABLE blindness in premature babies.
Screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity(ROP) is a crucial part of our children eyecare services. It involves the checking of a premature baby’s retina to ensure that its development is taking place smoothly. With better survival of even extremely small babies who weigh less than a kilo, there has been an increase in the occurrence of ROP. TIMELY screening and treatment is the only way to prevent ROP blindness.
‘tees din roshni ke ‘ or the ‘ 30 DAY ‘ rule is easy to remember wherein the baby’s eyes should be checked within 30 days of birth for the presence of ROP. Our centre is equipped with the state’s first and only mobile paediatric retinal imaging device known as RETCAM shuttle by Clarity International Inc., U.S.A. this handheld camera photographs the baby’s retina in a safe, quick and painless manner to ensure correct diagnosis of ROP.
Treatment for ROP in the form of laser or injection is done by a trained Retina specialist.
SAMROP – ‘Screening And Management Of ROP’ is a program started by us for RETCAM based screening of ROP for babies admitted in the NICU. It has now also extended its services to Raebareilly, Gorakhpur , Varanasi and Agra. We have a dedicated 24-hour ROP helpline number for quick appointments and any ROP related queries.
